Here’s a look at recent pig production and pork industry news, including PigTek’s new Swing-Fix Gestation Stalls and two pork industry-related semi-finalists in AFBF’s Ag Innovation Challenge.
PigTek Releases New Swing-Fix Gestation Stalls
A solution aimed to help pig producers take sow management to a higher level, meeting new animal space requirements in compliance with Proposition 12, PigTek’s releases their new, Swing-Fix gestation stall.
Available as a retrofit to back gates or existing conventional stalls, or as new installation, the Swing-Fix allows sows to walk freely in and out of individual stalls. Additionally, producers can temporarily lock sows into the stalls to aid breeding and pregnancy scanning, says the release. Swing-Fix Gestation Stalls are available with standard and artificial insemination doors, have few moving parts to help reduce maintenance and provide a quiet operating environment aimed to minimize animal stress.
Two Semi-finalists in 2022 Farm Bureau Ag Innovation Challenge Focus on Pork Industry
The top 10 semi-finalists have been announced in the 2022 Farm Bureau Ag Innovation Challenge, with two teams focused on the pig and pork industry.
Hennen Pig Chute
The Hennen Pig Chute, developed by Brad Hennen of Ghent, Minn., is a pig conveyor chute that restrains pigs in order, improving the accuracy and efficacy of vaccination. In addition, the chute aims to reduce stress on pigs and people, reduce bent and broken needles and ensure every pig receives proper dosage.
Here’s a look at the chute in action:
ChopLocal
Serving family farms, meat producers and small butchers across Iowa and surrounding states, the ChopLocal marketplace, founded by Iowa farmers, allows customers to order meat online from multiple farms and businesses for pick-up or delivery, building a more resilient meat supply chain.
Each farm vendor has their own “microstore” on ChopLocal, as the Director of Marketing and Vendor Relations and co-founder, Katie Olthoff says, “It’s really important to us that our vendors can tell their story and maintain their identity.”
Both ChopLocal and the Hennen Pig Chute will compete to advance to the final four in the contest, with a winner to be announced at the annual American Farm Bureau Federation Convention to be held Jan. 6-9 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
