Every great livestock breeder knows the power of a strong pedigree, and Dr. Clint Schwab’s own “pedigree” is a mix of blue-collar work ethic, academic rigor and a competitive drive honed in the collegiate livestock judging arena. What started as his hands-on approach to solving problems as a kid has transferred over into high-level genetics and industry-leading systems today.
“I’m the son of a diesel mechanic, and I came from deep agricultural roots with very modest means on both sides of my pedigree,” says Schwab, vice president of technology and customer success at AcuFast Genetics. “I suppose that’s led to my scrappy and creative way of thinking. Along the way, I’ve found myself in points in my career where that was reinforced and I discovered that I thrive in those environments.”
Whether he’s working on a do-it-yourself project around the home or finding solutions in the genetics business, Schwab is a builder at heart.
The Show Ring as a Foundation for Systems Thinking
Before mastering advanced bioinformatics and genomic equations, Clint spent years evaluating livestock on the collegiate level as a contestant and a coach. He says evaluating livestock is not just about placing a class of animals; it’s a masterclass in communication, rapid decision-making and understanding how independent pieces function together as a unified system.
“Livestock judging for me was essentially evaluating puzzle pieces,” Schwab explains. “A quality animal represents a well-functioning system. It’s about how independent pieces—like skeletal structure and design—function together as a unified whole to contribute to the next generation.”
While modern breeders have access to unprecedented digital tools, Schwab insists that physical fundamentals still dictate genetic success. If an animal lacks the structural soundness to walk, even the most elite genetic potential is wasted.
The “Two AIs” Convergence in Swine Breeding
The future of swine breeding, Schwab believes, lies at a volatile but brilliant intersection: the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial insemination (AI).
- The Reproductive Engine: Advanced reproductive techniques like low-dose insemination and IVF allow breeders to find elite genetic “outliers” and rapidly scale them across commercial herds.
- The Digital GPS: Precision phenotyping and bioinformatics create massive, granular data streams. Artificial intelligence (the computer science) is the tool required to sort through this noise, identifying the perfect genetic matches while mitigating the risk of scaling negative traits.
“As we couple those technologies together, some of the things that seemed nearly impossible in the past are becoming closer to reality,” Schwab says. “It’s a combination of a lot of different things today. They work in concert – that’s what really creates solutions.”
He says it’s a cycle that anchors back to how the pork industry thinks about genetic nucleus systems.
“They have a purpose going forward – maintaining genetic variation – but have the responsibility of creating new and different outliers each generation,” Schwab explains. “These technologies are what allow us to leverage those outliers and get that genetic progress that’s created at the nucleus level in the hands of those commercial producers, where they can see and feel the value a lot faster.”
But that is a risky business, he adds.
“You concentrate your risk, you amplify not only the good, but if you don’t have the right tools in place, you can amplify the bad too,” he says. “That’s why the precision phenotyping tools and the added accuracy through bioinformatics and genomic technologies can help us mitigate that risk and understand those outliers better where we can leverage them.”
Simplicity is Key to ROI in Tough Market Cycles
For commercial pork producers operating on razor-thin margins, high-tech promises can feel like an expensive distraction. Schwab’s advice? Don’t try to build the whole skyscraper at once.
“The complexity of a technology has to be proportional to its value proposition,” Schwab says. “Sometimes taking incremental, tangible steps that compound silently in the background is actually faster in the long run than trying to implement the full genetic gamut at once. I’ve made that mistake myself, and I’ve learned to break it down so producers can see the ROI at every step.”
The Hardest Lesson: Leading Pigs vs. Leading People
As Schwab transitioned from a technical scientist to a corporate executive, his biggest hurdles weren’t mathematical. They were human. As a high-drive, results-oriented leader, he had to learn that building a team requires the same systemic balance as breeding a herd.
“A lot of the mistakes I’ve made revolve around not prioritizing people first,” Schwab admits. “I have a natural tendency to drive hard for results. But if you don’t enable and facilitate the talent around you, you’ll never actually reach those goals.”
In an era where machine learning is taking over data analysis, Schwab is convinced that emotional intelligence, collaboration, humility and mentorship are the ultimate differentiators.
“Be smart, humble and hungry,” Schwab says. “The people who grow the most are those who trust each other and collaborate. Everything else comes with that.”

“He’s constantly thinking to the future and applying his knowledge,” Wolter says. “And he does it in a strategic context that leads others to see that future.”
Schwab believes the ultimate way to grow is to fuel your curiosity, grow the fire in your belly, remain anchored to your core values and commit to those around you.
“The leadership skills that people learn will only grow in importance, in my view, and I think if we just learn what collaboration, networks and indirect leadership really means, and look for opportunities to practice it, we’ll be in good shape,” he says. “Don’t minimize the incremental and small impacts you can have on people on a daily basis. Your influence can compound, which means that just like your 401(k), the sooner you deposit, the bigger the long-term value.”
