As the pumpkins begin to line the porch, evenings cool down enough to light the firepit out back and the fresh feelings of fall fill the air, the excitement and beauty of autumn is present all around the country.
For some, it also means the hustle and bustle of corn and soybean harvest and continued pig farming duties, only with less daylight.
For many pig farmers, fall is simply another season. However, the month of October brings a special significance to those who take part in the industry every day.
Known as PORKtober, Farm Journal’s PORK looks forward to showcasing the industry and those who work to provide nutritious, flavorful pork to store shelves, restaurants and our tables at home. It’s a month full of celebrating pork, and we are here for it!
We also look forward to highlighting assets of the industry, including:
People — without those who care for the animals, the industry would have nothing. From late night sow checks to biosecurity and animal health protection, people are the lifeblood of a successful operation.
Opportunity — as an affordable, nutritious protein, there is opportunity for pork demand to grow. In U.S. households and abroad, pork continues to be a protein of choice for many consumers.
Responsibility — from resource management to animal health, a large responsibility in pork production exists. The industry continues to use resources and improve efficiency as part of a greater mission in providing a sustainable product to consumers.
Knowledge — as Sir Francis Bacon (no pun intended) wrote, “knowledge itself is power.” In today’s connected world, having and sharing knowledge of pig and pork production creates an exponential impact on the reputation and influence of the industry.
Stay tuned to the Farm Journal’s PORK website, social media channels and follow #PORKtober to see delicious recipes, producer features and pork facts and information throughout the month ahead.
