A challenging spring has delayed many farmers from their normal planting schedule, and those challenges are now spilling over to higher grain prices, more expensive feed costs and delays in other livestock activities such as hauling manure.
But Pat McGonegle, Iowa Pork Producers Association CEO, says the opportunities are still greater than the challenges this year.
The world’s demand for protein has kept pork prices up, despite continual trade headwinds. He points to the two new packing plants that have begun operations in Iowa. These plants feature the latest technology for food safety and efficiency of processing pork.
