National Pork Board’s health and wellness team provided input to the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review (NESR) protocols on behalf of U.S. pig producers and farmers.
Comments made were focused on the review of nutrient evidence for the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines, highlighting these key takeaways:
1. Expanding Cardiovascular Risk Measures: NPB provided evidence that could expand the types of cardiovascular risk measures being included in the protocols and the intervention length of research studies. This expansion of included studies could bring greater depth and breadth of the research available to draw conclusions on for recommendations.
2. Importance of Modeling and Simulation Research: NPB highlighted recent USDA Thrifty Food Plan nutrition research as a foundation as to the importance of modeling and simulation research included in the review protocols.
3. Consistency in ‘Nutrient-Dense’ Definition: NPB highlighted the importance of consistency in terms of ‘nutrient-dense’ definition, to support the role of pork in its nutritional contributions to the human body.
