Finland has detected African swine fever (ASF) for the first time. Preliminary PCR testing conducted by the Finnish Food Authority confirmed the viral genome in the carcasses of three wild boar piglets. A local resident found the dead piglets in Vaalimaa, within the eastern municipality of Virolahti near the Russian border. The Finnish Food Authority is working to verify the preliminary results with the European Union’s reference laboratory in Spain.
To halt the spread of the highly contagious virus, authorities established an emergency infection zone on July 30, refining it on July 31 to implement a “core area” with even stricter restrictions. Within these zones, pig movements are restricted, hunting is banned and biosecurity protocols have been significantly tightened.
The outbreak poses a severe threat to Finland’s swine industry. According to the Natural Resources Institute Finland, there were an estimated 2,380 wild boars in the country in January 2026. As ASF has continued its devastating march from Africa across Europe and Asia, it has destroyed pig populations, triggered aggressive trade restrictions and highly disrupted global meat markets.
The domestic economic impact could be severe, experts warn. A 2015 Finnish research report, “The effects of structural change in agriculture on the spread of animal disease in Finland,” said ASF and foot-and-mouth disease would cause the greatest economic losses in the country due to immediate distortions and bans in food exports. Indeed, trading partners outside the EU—including Taiwan—have already begun suspending imports of Finnish pork products in response to the news.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) warned that anyone caught importing pork products from Finland could face penalties, after Finland’s confirmation of ASF. Importers found to have violated the new rules will have the products returned to Finland or destroyed, the ministry explained. According to MOA statistics, Taiwan imported 985 metric tons of pork products from Finland between January and June this year.
While ASF is entirely harmless to humans, it is exceptionally resilient in the environment and highly lethal to pigs and wild boars. The virus is easily spread through animal and feed transport, infected wild boar movements, or when healthy animals consume contaminated food waste left in the wild.
