Feed the Right Dog and 4 Other Things I Can’t Get Out of My Head

(Lori Hays)

Since I was a kid, I have found myself drawn to motivational leaders and inspiring words. I’ve been a notetaker wherever I go, scrawling out words I want to remember and live by. I’m fascinated by looking inward and trying to figure out what makes people tick – what makes me tick. My wall is cluttered with brightly colored sticky notes reminding me that “life is a balance between holding on and letting go” and “don’t let compliments go to your head or criticism to your heart.”

Here are five things I can’t get out of my head this year.

1.    Don’t just be willing to change, find a way to change.
“If you want to keep getting what you are getting, keep doing what you are doing. But if you want things to get better, be willing to change and find a way.” – Rob Brenneman in It’s Time to Up Your Game

2.    Read less minds, ask more questions.
“Read less minds, ask more questions. What I've learned over the years is it's much better to meet a need than it is to invent a need.” – Jon Acuff in The Surprising Truth: 4 Things You May Not Know About Reaching Goals

3.    Feed the right dog.
“We all have a positive and a negative dog inside of us. It’s part of our human nature. The one that wins is the one you feed the most. If you feed a negative dog, it will grow stronger. If you feed the positive dog, it will grow stronger, and the negative dog will weaken.” – Dave Gordon in Take a Walk of Gratitude

4.    You get what you plan for.
“You get what you plan for – and failing to plan is a plan to fail.” – Everett Forkner in A Stockman Reveals His Trade Secrets

5.    Do what you love.
“If you don't like what you're doing right now, quit. Go find you a job you like; life is too short to do something you don't enjoy.” – Roy Poage in The Grandfather of Modern Swine Production
