Quotes from World Pork Expo
What were your impressions of your first World Pork Expo?
“I’d envisioned in my mind what I thought World Pork Expo would be, but the thing that’s had the biggest impact on me has been the people. I’ve worked for The Maschhoffs for 9 years so I have a good understanding of the people in the industry but it’s almost indescribable to see the camaraderie and knowing we’re all here for the same reason. It’s just very humbling to be part of it.” – Danielle Solis, communications specialist, The Maschhoffs
What did you miss most about not having World Pork Expo the last two years?
“The limited interaction between producers and stakeholders in the industry really made it feel like progress came to a halt. Now that we’re back together, you can feel synergies being created and ideas being exchanged.” – Nick Berry, CEO of Swine Genetics International
What do you like most about coming to World Pork Expo?
“The food. And I like to see people from all over and how many businesses there are that make things for pigs and all the technologies focused on pigs.” – Nick Keller, 12, Nerstrand, Minn.
“I like learning about everything and picking up candy and other giveaways.” – Nate Keller, 11, Nerstrand, Minn.
What’s the U.S. economy look like right now?
“The consumer price index has seen a sharp runup recently. It is getting more expensive for consumers because costs throughout the system are going up. Wages are up but jobs are down, partly due to unemployment payments and stimulus checks, and there’s a lot more money in the market. That money has to go somewhere and inflation makes each dollar worth a little less than the dollar before.” – Jason Lusk, Distinguished Professor and Head of the Agricultural Economics Department at Purdue University
What’s the biggest mistake you see producers make in terms of succession planning?
“Procrastination. Producers, stop procrastinating! You update your production – you also have to update your estate planning. Stop putting it off! Determine what are you trying to accomplish short-term and long-term and have those conversations with family members.” – Melissa O’Rourke, JD, farm management specialist for Iowa State University Extension
