No Expansion for South Dakota Hog Farm
The Brown County, S.D., Planning Commission has rejected the proposed expansion of a small hog operation near Bath, S.D.
The American News reports the commission unanimously denied two necessary permits for a hog farm expansion this week. The commission had tabled action on the request in March after some neighbors of the operation voiced concerns.
The permits included a special exception permit for a concentrated animal feeding operation at 12897 395th Ave., and a variance that would adjust the setbacks for two hog barns, said Brown County Planning and Zoning Director Scott Bader.
The hog operation would be a Class D/E operation, meaning there could be up to 300 animal units. A finished swine is 0.4 of an animal unit, a sow 0.47 and a nursery swine 0.1.
Tanya Torguson, the farm owner, told residents at the March meeting she didn’t plan to have that large of an operation. Regardless, several neighbors voiced concerns.
County Commission Chairwoman Rachel Kippley says the Wolff Family Genetics hog operation failed to get the approval of enough neighbors for the expansion to be allowed.
The hog farm can appeal to the full County Commission.
