Merck Animal Health Receives FDA Approval of NUFLOR-S and AROVYN

Merck Animal Health announced on March 3 that it has received U.S. FDA approval of NUFLOR-S (florfenicol) Injectable Solution and AROVYN (tulathromycin injection) – broad-spectrum, prescription antibiotics that treat the major organisms associated with swine respiratory disease (SRD).

“Merck Animal Health is pleased to expand our portfolio of offerings with two antimicrobials to help veterinarians and producers combat SRD,” Doug King, DVM, associate director of the swine technical services for Merck Animal Health, said in a release. “We are committed to partnering with veterinarians and swine producers and offering comprehensive solutions that lead to improved animal health outcomes and welfare. Expanding our portfolio to include antimicrobials further enables us to accomplish this goal.”

NUFLOR-S Injectable Solution is indicated for treatment of SRD associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella Choleraesuis, Streptococcus suis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and Glaesserella (Haemophilus) parasuis in swine except for nursing piglets and swine of reproductive age intended for breeding. AROVYN Injectable Solution is indicated for the treatment of SRD associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Haemophilus parasuis, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae; and for the control of SRD associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in groups of pigs where SRD has been diagnosed.

NUFLOR-S – a prescription antibiotic for swine, and AROVYN -- a prescription antibiotic for cattle and swine – will be available from or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. NUFLOR-S will come in 100-mL vials and AROVYN will come in 100-, 250- and 500-mL vials.

Jyga Tech Promotes Uitermarkt

Jyga Tech USA, Inc. has promoted Amanda Uitermarkt as USA Technical Director.

“Amanda has been a key part of our success for the last 4 years, and we were thrilled to promote her to this important position,” Dr. Hyatt Frobose, USA Commercial Director, said in a company release. “As our American team grew, it was obvious to us that we had to appoint a trustworthy person in this role.”

Uitermarkt joined Gestal/Jyga Technologies in 2018 as a Sales and Technical Service Representative in the Midwest area. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and then graduated from Kansas State University’s applied swine nutrition program with a master’s degree in swine nutrition in 2013. Immediately after graduation, she joined Carthage Innovative Swine Solutions, LLC for almost five years and assisted in research projects on commercial wean-to-finish and sow sites. In her past role, she assisted producers and integrators from start to finish on new constructions or retrofit projects and with the integration of precision feeding equipment, the company said in a release.

Nebraska Pork Association Hires Education Director

Sophia Lentfer of Firth, Neb., has been hired as the education director for the Nebraska Pork Producers Association (NPPA). Lentfer graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in May of 2020 majoring in animal science with an emphasis in meat science. She was a member of the UNL Livestock and Meat Judging teams, an active member of the Kappa Delta sorority and a member of the 2018 NPPA Mentor program.

Lentfer has a strong background in youth organizations. As a 4-H and FFA member, she formed leadership qualities, self-confidence and other personal growth skills, a release said. She assisted with organizing seven national junior events for Team Purebred to offer kids opportunities to exhibit projects on a regional and national level. She was selected to serve as a national representative for junior swine producers to help connect junior members to industry and offer professional development. She served as secretary for the Team Purebred Junior Board from June 2018 through June 2020.

The Director of Education will work closely with elementary, secondary and post-secondary education providers, and 4-H and FFA leaders to connect them to the pork industry.
