The “pork-themed” concession and bar will replace Diamond Jack’s, a four-decade-old bar at the fairgrounds, reports the Des Moines Register. Diamond Jacks closed after the owner and two others were charged in connection with failing to pay a quarter-million dollars in sales taxes, the article said. The case is still pending.
JR’s South Pork Ranch owner Brooks Reynolds told the Des Moines Register that he will do a few soft openings in July leading up to the Iowa State Fair and then will open at full capacity on August 12.
The new menu won’t be released until approved by the fair board, but he said customers can expect to see some fun pork items with “unique flavors.”
Seventeen groups bid on the Iowa State Fair’s proposal for someone to take over the Diamond Jack’s location.
Iowa State Fair president Gary Slater said the Iowa State Fair will resume this August, after canceling in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
