The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) encourages eligible students to apply for the 2022 Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarship.

Sponsored by the CME Group and the National Pork Industry Foundation and administered by the NPPC, the program recognizes outstanding youth in the pork community.

The scholarship program was introduced in 1990 by CME Group, Inc. and NPPC to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the CME Live Hog futures with four scholarships for deserving youth. In 2006, the scholarship was renamed to honor the passing of NPPC Board of Director Lois Britt. Britt, a lifetime supporter of agriculture, spent 34 years serving the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and finished her career with Murphy-Brown LLC (Smithfield) in public and government relations for 15 years. In 2015, the 50th anniversary of the Live Hog future, the number of scholarships awarded increased from four to five. In 2017, the National Pork Industry Foundation became another partner so the scholarships could double from five to 10 $2,500 scholarships.

The scholarships will be awarded to students who intend to pursue a career in the pork industry and may emerge as future industry leaders. They are intended to support undergraduate students in a two-year swine program or a four-year college of agriculture.

To be eligible, applicants must write a brief letter indicating what role the applicant sees themselves playing in the pork industry after graduation and submit an essay of 750 words or less describing an issue the applicant sees confronting the pork industry today or in the future, including offering their solutions. Applicants should obtain two letters of reference from current or former professors or industry professionals.

For complete application requirements and to learn more about the program, visit nppc.org/programs/scholarships. The deadline to enter is Jan. 3, 2022.
