Nearly 10,000 pigs were killed in a barn fire on Feb. 12 at an Olymel finishing barn in Sturgis, Sask.

According to SaskToday, the “Kopje barn” was a total loss and all the animals were killed in the fire. Fortunately, all of the staff were safe and unharmed by the fire.

Staff on the property saw the fire and called the fire department on Sunday morning, but by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had fully engulfed the barn. The fire spread quickly throughout the barn, the article said.

Local fire authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. A second Olymel barn and feed mill located less than a half mile away were not affected.

Olymel, a food service company headquartered in Quebec, has 15,000 employees, 35 production facilities and distribution centers with a capacity of 185,000 hogs per week, CTV News reported.
