It’s not often that agriculture can say something positive about the Humane Society of the United States. The organization supports the end of livestock production and agriculture as we know it, but in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, it has had people on the ground helping with disaster response. A recent article on PORK Network covered what the American Humane was doing to help during the disaster, and a reader’s response to that article led to the discovery that HSUS also was involved in rescue and relief efforts.
The group has been working in South Carolina since last week, assisting in transporting animals to safety, and Humane Society International has opened an emergency veterinary clinic in Haiti.
These are the kinds of activities that truly benefit animals in need. Rather than fighting the use of gestation stalls, staging undercover videos, suing national pork groups, or twisting the facts on animal welfare, the group’s work on the ground with animals in disaster areas is to be commended.
