The Iowa State University Department of Animal Science announced the creation of the Dr. John Patience Chair in Animal Nutrition honoring John Patience, professor emeritus and global leader in swine nutrition education and research.

“Iowa is the nation’s leading pork producer, and Iowa State is a world leader in all aspects of swine production and education. To maintain and grow this status, we need to attract outstanding faculty like John Patience,” said Daniel J. Robison, holder of the Endowed Dean’s Chair in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in a release. “The resources that come with a named faculty position will enable us do that.”

The holder of the Dr. John Patience Chair in Animal Nutrition will have opportunities to advance teaching and research at Iowa State, and positively impact the swine industry, a release said. The position will have resources to attract and mentor top-level students who will contribute to research that leads to the development and adoption of new technologies.

“Great students are drawn to great teachers,” Dan Thomson, professor of animal science and department chair, said in a release. “We are committed to producing innovative and well-rounded experts who are needed by the industry.”

Patience retired in April 2021 after 13 years at Iowa State. Prior to joining the animal science faculty, he was president of the Prairie Swine Centre in Saskatoon, Canada. His research has focused on applied swine nutrition, energy metabolism, and fiber and fat utilization. During his time at Iowa State, he attracted significant research funding, published a wide range of journal articles, and represented Iowa State at academic and industry conferences around the world.

“Iowa State’s reputation in animal science, the excellent faculty, strong industry relationships and opportunities in teaching and research made the decision to come here an easy one,” Patience said in a release. “I am incredibly proud to be part of this outstanding animal science program and am deeply honored to have a faculty position bear my name.”

A fundraising campaign to fund the faculty position has been launched through the Iowa State University Foundation. For information, visit foundation.iastate.edu/JohnPatienceChairFund.
