Some people share cool facts about pigs or a picture of themselves holding a newborn piglet to celebrate National Pig Day on March 1. But for former America’s Pig Farmer of the Year Chris Hoffman, he may be kissing a pig unless he wins the Kiss a Pig for National Pig Day challenge by the Pennsylvania Friends of Ag Foundation.
Hoffman, a pig farmer from McAlisterville, Pa., is up against dairy farmer and Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation board chairman Rick Ebert in a bragging rights challenge to see who can raise the most funds to help their state’s ag literacy and outreach programs.
“We just wanted to do something fun and light to celebrate agriculture, and I wanted to represent the pork industry of course,” Hoffman says. “The world seems to have a dark cloud over it now. We are just trying to create a chuckle using cute piglets and hoping to make a difference for agriculture.”
The winner of the contest gets bragging rights. The other gets to kiss a pig, Hoffman says.
“Ultimately we are trying to start a conversation about agriculture and are using every media available to create a buzz about our ag literacy foundation,” he adds.
Hoffman serves as the vice chairman of the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation. The organization was created in October of 1986 when a group of farmers and business leaders recognized the need to identify agricultural issues before they became problems. The foundation seeks to enlighten the public about farming and agriculture, create educational programs for children, train teachers on agricultural concepts, support agricultural and preservation of the farm and promote career opportunities in agriculture.
