Regardless if you are a resolution maker or disagree with that theory completely, the start of a new year is a great time to revisit goals for your pork operation and for yourself as a pork producer. Here’s a look at what some of our readers are setting goals to achieve in the year ahead.

“Allocate more time to telling our farm’s story. Everything our farm does centers around providing the best animal welfare, environmental stewardship and community involvement. As farmers, we prefer to keep to ourselves, but we are missing a valuable chance to educate the public.”
– Nick Seger, Ohio pork producer

“For 2024, my goal is to fully embrace and leverage the technology implemented on our farm to optimize efficiencies and enhance productivity. This is going to enable us to stay ahead of the curve and continue to drive constant improvement in the barns.”
– Erin Brenneman, Iowa pork producer

“One of my goals is a life goal – start slowing down to spend more time with our family. My bigger goal related to pork production is to inspire more producers to get involved. It’s only through our involvement in local, state and national governments that we can show all of the efforts that are made. The original circle of life is wrapped up in agriculture – growing crops, using crops to produce livestock, using manure to produce crops. We need all producers sharing our sustainability goals. Anyone that has kids and grandkids that want to be able to have the opportunity to farm and raise pigs needs to get involved. We have to do this for future generations. ”
– Craig Andersen, South Dakota pork producer

“Before the end of 2024, we will have two children in college, including one whose long-term goal is to come home to the farm. One of our biggest goals for 2024 is to make sure we are making the right decisions each and every day – animal health, neighbor relations, and possibly most important in this environment, financial – so that having a child come home to the farm one day is possible.”
– Heather Hill, Indiana pork producer

“I’m going to place great emphasis on working with our legislators to instill the urgency of passing a new farm bill. I hope to see provisions included to ease restrictions put in place by individual states like California’s Prop 12.”
– Thomas Titus, Illinois pork producer

“That the only ASF we see is in our herdmark.”
– Pat and Doug Albright, Michigan pork producers

“My goal in 2024 is to help spread the good word of pork producers across the state. I want to collaborate with peers on how to keep the industry viable from top to bottom, all while raising quality, healthy animals safe and sustainably.”
– Nate Huntley, Iowa pork producer
