Elanco Announces FDA Approval of Increxxa
Elanco Animal Health Incorporated announced the U.S. FDA approval of Increxxa (tulathromycin injection) for the treatment of swine respiratory disease (SRD).

For swine, Increxxa becomes another product within Elanco’s SRD portfolio, allowing producers the opportunity to find the proper solution needed for their respiratory disease, according to a company release. Balancing whole herd health with individual pig solutions, Increxxa is a single-dose application licensed for the treatment and control of SRD in swine.

SRD leads to negative impacts on performance as well as increased mortality, causing substantial production and economic losses. By quickly targeting and rapidly circulating at the site of infection, with its long half-life Increxxa controls SRD early while providing pigs more time to mount an effective SRD defense.

“The addition of Increxxa to Elanco’s portfolio continues to strengthen the tool chest against swine diseases in our modern production systems. Our product portfolio offers multiple active ingredients, multiple routes of administration and multiple label indications, leading to more innovative veterinarian-derived treatment and control options,” said Dr. Eric Christianson, Elanco consulting veterinarian.

Increxxa Injectable Solution is indicated for the treatment of SRD, associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Haemophilus parasuis and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae; and for the control of SRD associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in groups of pigs where SRD has been diagnosed.

Smithfield Foods Announces Plastic Reduction Commitments
Smithfield Foods announced bold new commitments it will implement across its portfolio by 2030: to achieve consumer packaging that is 90% recyclable, reusable or industrially compostable and to halve use of virgin petroleum-based plastic, the company said in a release.

Smithfield has established an internal cross-functional team to investigate and explore new strategic packaging and plastic-use reduction options in order to meet these goals. One of its current efforts is the identification and testing of replacements for products currently packaged using polystyrene trays.

The new recyclable packaging and plastic reduction goals build upon the company’s zero-waste-to-landfill initiative, according to a company release, which outlines a plan to reduce overall solid waste sent to landfills 75% by 2025 through utilizing or recycling materials once disposed of as garbage.
