The mayor of Perry, Iowa, is hopeful the former Tyson Foods Pork Plant building will be utilized once again, according to a local radio station.

Perry Mayor Dick Cavanaugh said there are still negotiations ongoing between Tyson Foods and potential buyers. Although he told the local radio station that conversations have “somewhat stalled” with the top potential buyer, he believes a deal can still get done.

The mayor also shared plans to visit Tyson’s headquarters in Arkansas with a delegation to emphasize the community’s need for a resolution.

“We really need them to let the place go and bring somebody in to help our community,” Cavanaugh told the station.

The plant shuttered in late June, laying off approximately 1,300 employees.

“The company, which reaped big profits as meat prices soared during the COVID-19 pandemic, has since confronted a decline and slowing demand for some products,” Reuters reported in March when the initial announcement was made.
