Hormel Foods is laying off 135 workers at its Tucker, Ga., facility, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with state officials.
Hormel opened its Tucker plant in 1969, producing precooked bacon, Hormel chili and Dinty Moore stew. It has 400 employees, according to the company’s website.
The action is classified as a permanent reduction in force, not a facility closure, according to the notice. Although multiple dates are associated with the reduction, only one location is impacted.
The company’s decision to stop bacon production at the plant is the reason for the layoffs, a company spokesperson told a local news source.
The spokesperson explained the decision was driven by aging equipment and the significant investment required to align with the company’s long-term strategic objectives.
The Tucker plant’s bacon production will be moved to other facilities, the story said.
The company spokesperson said Hormel would work with the union to support those affected by the layoffs.
Some of the jobs being eliminated include precook production, grocery products-canning, meat products-packaging and curing, among others.
