The number of hogs in South Dakota as 2015 comes to an end is up 7 percent from the previous year.
The latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows hogs and pigs in the state on Dec. 1 totaled 1.36 million head. The breeding hog inventory was 175,000 head and the market hog inventory was 1.19 million head. The market hog inventory was up 7 percent over the year.
The September-November 2015 South Dakota pig crop, at 966,000 head, was up 4 percent from 2014. Sows farrowed during that period totaled 89,000 head, up 3 percent from last year.
South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 87,000 sows during the December 2015-February 2016 quarter, up 2 percent from the actual farrowing during the same period a year ago.
