Halloween Costume DIY: Pig in a Blanket

In need of a last-minute Halloween costume that shows off your love of puns and pork? Try this easy (and cozy!) option.

There’s no doubt that Halloween 2020 will look different than it has in years past. Whether you’re staying home, participating in trunk-or-treating, joining a zoom costume party or sticking it out for the traditional trick-or-treating, there’s no reason you can’t dress up.

While I love spooky movies and fall treats, I’m not a huge costume lover. This usually means if I’m coerced into a costume, it’s one I’ve made myself just a few days before. This super easy “Pig in a Blanket” costume might be one of my favorites and fits right in with the Farm Journal team’s ag-related costumes last year. (Check them out at the end.)

Inspired to throw it together yourself? Here’s a step-by-step guide. I was able to find all the supplies I needed for less than $10 total at my local craft store, and it took about 15 minutes to put together.

What you need:

1 sheet dark pink craft foam
1 sheet pale pink craft foam
1 headband* see note
Clear tape
Black marker
Scissors
Pink t-shirt
Blanket

*I used a cat ear headband to give the ears something to help hold them up because I already had it, but you could use a plain one. The foam is strong enough to stand up on its own.

If you’re not sure about free handing these shapes, a Google image search for pig snout and ear illustration will bring up samples you could use as reference or print out and trace around.

Step 1: Snout

Cut out one oval shape for the snout. It can be as big or small as you want. I started larger and trimmed until it looked right, just judging by holding it up in front of my face. Draw two vertical ovals for nostrils in the center of the oval and fill in with the black marker.

Step 2: Ears

Cut four dark pink leaf shapes for the base of the ears. If using a headband that already has ears on it, tape these to the front and back of each ear. If your headband is plain, tape two of the leaf shapes together to create a front and back, and then attach to your headband.

Step 3: Ears continued

Cut two light pink leaf shapes, slightly smaller than the dark pink ones, and tape to the front of the ears to create depth. (This is optional.)

Step 4: Assemble your outfit

To put the whole look together, put on your pink t-shirt, your ears and nose, and wrap yourself in the blanket. It’s as easy as that! Because I wasn’t going to be doing heavy activity, I just used tape to gently stick the snout to my own nose. You could also attach elastic, like a mask, if that’s more comfortable.

I happen to have a bright pink onesie that I rarely wear, so I took this as an opportunity to pull it out of the closet.

Featured here are two other Farm Journal editors, with easily pulled together farm costumes. “Cow Patti” can be created with a cow print onesie and a nametag that says Patti. The “Prizewinning Cow” features coveralls for Jersey cow coloring, homemade ear headband and a purple ribbon.

Are you planning your own costume that celebrates agriculture? We’d love to see it. We are looking for your best farm costume ideas to feature in a special Halloween story. To join in the fun, send us a photo of your child in their farm-themed costume at jshike@farmjournal.com by 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 28. Please, no repeats from our 2019 edition.
