A semi hauling a trailer containing 41,000 lb. of pork meat suddenly burst into flames traveling northbound on Interstate 29 near Oxbow, N.D. on Jan. 4. The fire closed down the interstate as fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
According to a press release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the trailer suddenly burst into flames, causing the side of the trailer to split open. Drivers in the area were given a detour while fire crews extinguished the blaze.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol shared on Facebook that cleanup was difficult and extensive due to burning grease and fat. The insterestate was finally reopened at noon on Jan. 5 after the scene was cleared.
The fire currently remains under investigation.
In addition to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, other agencies involved in this incident include the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Southern Valley Fire and Rescue, Kindred Fire and Rescue, and the ND Department of Transportation.
