An escaped pig explored a beautiful, snowy day in Richmond, Ky., on Jan. 16 before Richmond Police Department officers caught the pig.

“Kids aren’t the only ones who love a snow day!” the police department wrote on Facebook. “Officers responded this morning to a pig on the loose! After escaping its trailer, this hefty friend spent some time enjoying the winter weather and recent snowfall.”

The Richmond Register reports that somebody flagged down an officer on duty and told them a sow was on the loose. A group of officers went to find the loose pig, while the other officers found the pig’s owner at a local hotel.

Officer Atkin assisted with catching the pig and said, "Initially, I was concerned for the public and pig’s safety since it could possibly run into vehicle traffic on a major roadway.”

The officers ended up using their cruisers to create a box around the pig. Officers had to wait until a trailer showed up to move the pig. According to one officer, who has been with the department for 13 years, he has responded to numerous calls regarding animals in the city.

“They don’t teach you how to handle livestock, or really even dogs and stuff, in the police academy…The way this job goes, you always get what you least expect. One day you could be out dealing with robbers and drug dealers; then the next call, you’re going in dealing with a pig that’s running loose,” he told the Richmond Register.

Officer Miniard said this was the first loose pig call he's had. He wasn't sure if the pig would be docile or wild.

“I’m glad the pig wasn’t badly injured," Miniard said.
