Here’s a round-up of news headlines from Indiana, Iowa and Illinois state pork associations.

Indiana Pork Announces Regional Meetings
Beginning in mid-February, Indiana Pork will host a series of regional meetings throughout the state for pork producers. During the meeting, Indiana Pork staff will update attendees on activities of the association as well as local, state, and federal legislative issues. Guests will also hear about the latest international market trends. There will be ample time for questions and answers.

Dinner is included. RSVP’s are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. Meetings begin at 6pm local time. RSVP by visiting indianapork.org.

  • February 20- Junk Ditch Huntington Taproom, Huntington, Ind.
  • February 22 - Farmhouse Restaurant at Fair Oaks Farms, Fair Oaks, Ind.

Iowa Pork Producers Regional Conferences Slated
Four educational conferences for pork producers across Iowa will take place Feb. 19-22. The Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are joining forces to offer updates on the economic outlook of the pork market, swine health, disease preparedness and more. Pork producers, production employees, veterinarians and swine industry stakeholders are encouraged to register and attend one of the four events.

The conference locations and dates are:

  • Monday, Feb. 19: Sioux County Extension Office, Orange City, Iowa
  • Tuesday, Feb. 20: Briggs Woods Conference Center, Webster City, Iowa
  • Wednesday, Feb. 21: Nashua at the Borlaug Learning Center, Nashua, Iowa
  • Thursday, Feb. 22: Washington County Extension Office, Washington, Iowa

There are four topics for the afternoon sessions:

Updates from the National Pork Board
Brett Kaysen, senior vice president of producer and state engagement, will share program updates regarding work in domestic and international markets, as well as success in foreign animal disease prevention and preparedness.

Pork Market Outlook
Lee Schulz will summarize the current supply and demand situation, draw implications for hog and pork markets, and outline a series of broader issues shaping the marketplace.

Hot Topics in Swine Health
Chris Rademacher, DVM, will take a look at new disease surveillance tools available to producers and share what’s new with diseases such as PRRS, PED and E. coli, as well as some emerging diseases. Also get tips on preparing your farm for a foreign animal disease outbreak.

More Tools for your Toolbox
Iowa State University Extension has five area swine specialists across the state ready to help you solve production problems and provide practical solutions. They aim to promote and enable efficient pork production by disseminating decision-impacting information to producers. They will discuss some of the tools they can put in your toolbox.

Illinois Pork Producers Association Announces Future Leaders
The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) announced its third future leaders class of 2024-25 at Illinois Pork Expo. The 12 selected candidates represent a wide variety of industry leaders that have backgrounds ranging from allied industry to on-farm experience. The group will have their first meeting in Springfield on May 15-16, they will then travel to Smithfield in Monmouth for a processing plant tour in July and finish up in Chicago in October learning all about the retail and foodservice aspects of the industry.

“The goal of the first year of the future leaders program is to identify our next generation of leaders within the pork industry and develop their skill sets and educate them on government/regulatory issues, production standards, and retail/foodservice opportunities. In the second year of the program, the future leaders will have the opportunity to travel to DC and participate in one of the legislative action conferences coordinated in partnership with the National Pork Producers Council,” IPPA said in a release.
