Nearly 235,000 pounds of Alexander & Hornung fully cooked ham and pepperoni products are being recalled that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Dec. 5.

Alexander & Hornung, a St. Clair Shores, Mich., establishment and business unit of Perdue Premium Meat Company, Inc., produced the products on various dates. A full listing of dates is available here.

FSIS reports that the products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. M10125” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
The problem was discovered when the company notified FSIS that product sampling reported positive L. monocytogenes results. Although there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

When consumed, food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected, FSIS reports.

Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.

Check your refrigerators or freezers for this product, FSIS warns. If these products are found, throw them away or return to the place of purchase.
