University of Illinois Students Win Top Awards in AASV Student Competitions

University of Illinois student Erin Kettelkamp received the $5,000 scholarship for top student presentation at the 2021 American Association of Swine Veterinarians Annual Meeting.

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $25,000 to 15 veterinary students during the virtual AASV annual meeting. University of Illinois student Erin Kettelkamp received the $5,000 scholarship for top student presentation with “Effect of particle size and H2O2/PAA concentration on the efficacy of an aerosol decontamination system for items entering swine farms.” Zoetis provided the financial support for the Top Student Presenter Award.

Additional scholarships totaling $20,000 were funded by Elanco Animal Health. Four veterinary student presenters received $2,500 scholarships: Mindi Bracy, Oklahoma State University; Sabra McCallister, North Carolina State University; Zack Talbert, University of Illinois; and Allyson Witt, Iowa State University.

Five veterinary student presenters received $1,500 scholarships: Selena Clark, University of Illinois; Hunter Everett, North Carolina State University; Paige Haenig, University of Illinois; Kris Kovach, Iowa State University; and Andrew Shulman, University of Pennsylvania.

Student presenters receiving $500 scholarships included Sarah Botkin, University of Illinois; Brian Johnson, University of Illinois; Hannah Lathom, North Carolina State University; Rachel Patton, The Ohio State University; and Emily Pratt, Iowa State University.

From over 40 submissions, 15 students were selected to present during the annual meeting. Zoetis, sponsor of the Student Seminar, provided a $750 stipend to each student selected to participate.

Student Poster Competition
Fifteen veterinary students out of more than 40 applicants competed for awards in the Veterinary Student Poster Competition. United Animal Health sponsored the competition, offering awards totaling $4,000.

The top winner, receiving a $500 scholarship, was Luke Daniels of the University of Illinois with his poster “Use of computer-aided design to optimize swine facility airflow.”

The $400 scholarship winners included Nicholas Benge of Iowa State University and Melanie Boucher of University of Guelph. The $300 scholarship winners were Matthew Boulanger of University of Pennsylvania, Kyle Nisley of Iowa State University and Sydney Simmons of North Carolina State University. The $200 scholarship winners were Lucas Buehler of Ohio State University, Kate Edmunds of Michigan State University, Katyann Graham of Iowa State University, Isaac Goldner of University of Illinois, Ashley Hallowell of University of Pennsylvania, Kelly Hewitt of Iowa State University, Dayna Kinkade of University of Illinois, Brooke Kitting of University of Pennsylvania and Rachel Weidmayer of University of Minnesota. In addition to the poster competition awards, each student poster competition participant received a $250 stipend from Zoetis.
