Porcine sapovirus (PSaV), a potentially emerging disease, will be the main topic of the Swine Health Information Center and American Association of Swine Veterinarians’ next webinar. There is currently no treatment for PSaV infection.

PSaV, a calicivirus, historically has been detected in pigs with and without diarrhea, SHIC reports. Co-infection with other enteric pathogens is common, however PSaV has been identified as the sole cause of diarrhea in some outbreaks. Infection with PSaV is often subclinical while clinical illness occurs most frequently during the post-weaning period. Diarrhea can be mild to severe and is usually self-limiting, although may result in productivity and efficiency setbacks.
