Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul saved the life of Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst during a closed-door Republican party launch last Thursday.

Paul performed the Heimlich maneuver on Ernst after she started choking on food during the luncheon consisting of steaks and pork chops, CNN reports.

“Senator Rand Paul got to put his medical training to work,” CNN wrote. Paul formerly worked as an eye doctor.

After the incident, Paul talked to the other senators about noticing choking signs, CNN reports.

Ernst was later seen walking in the Capitol after the incident and posted this on social media.

“Can’t help but choke on the woke policies Dems are forcing down our throats. Thanks, Dr. @Rand Paul!”

Ernst, a native of Red Oak, Iowa, served in the military for over 23 years and has been representing Iowans in the U.S. Senate since 2014. She reintroduced the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act in the Senate in June with Sen. Chuck Grassley. She also has been a major supporter of funding the Beagle Brigade to serve as a key tool in the nation’s toolbox to detect harmful diseases that could pose a risk to the U.S. swine herd.
