October brings an end to Hunger Action Month, but Smithfield Foods employee donations sent it out with a grand finale.
Employees across the company’s domestic operations collected more than 130,000 pounds of food for the Feeding America® nationwide network of food banks. The donations will have an impact, since 37 million Americans, including 11 million children, are food insecure.
“As a food company, we’re extremely passionate about fighting food insecurity in the communities we call home and across the country,” said Jonathan Toms, associate manager of charitable initiatives for Smithfield Foods, in a company press release.
Feeding America® is a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 partner food pantries and meal programs. For 11 years, it has dedicated the month of September to raising awareness through Hunger Action Month.
Smithfield Foods employees’ donations in September are part of a larger partnership between Smithfield Foods and Feeding America®. Since 2008, Smithfield Foods has donated more than 140 million services of protein across all 50 U.S. states.
“We are truly grateful for Smithfield’s continuous support and partnership with the Feeding America® network of food banks,” Karen Hanner, vice president of product sourcing for Feeding America®, said in the press release.
