Northern China’s Breeding Herd Hit Hard By New ASF Infections

Reports indicate about 20% of the herd has been wiped out in the latest wave.

It’s thought 20% of the breeding herd in Northern China has been wiped out in the latest wave of African swine fever (ASF), reports AgDay’s Tricia Sloma. That’s what industry sources and analysts are telling Reuters.

The estimates are signaling a resurgence in the disease after more than a year of declining outbreaks. It could be a setback to China’s efforts to replenish its hog herds after the disease reached the country in 2018 and was believed to have wiped out 50% of the country’s pigs in a year.

Experts say an exceptionally cold winter along with a higher density of pigs following a year of restocking and new strains of ASF triggered the latest problem.
