New AP Pit Monitoring Stick Helps Producers Better Manage Manure Levels

AP, AGCO’s swine production equipment brand, is introducing a new Pit Monitoring Stick system that provides swine producers with real-time data to know precise manure pit levels so they can plan their pumping schedule more efficiently, the company said in a release.

John Slavin, AP product manager, said the new system helps swine producers better visualize the amount of manure and know how much storage they have left. It consists of a pressure sensor, a controller and a stick inserted into the pit to measure manure levels, which has traditionally been done by using a measuring tape or measuring stick.

“This new system also provides insights on how much pit storage producers are using week-to-week and month-to-month,” he said in a release. “As a further benefit, it can help detect excessive soaking and large water leaks without the producer being on-site.”

Slavin said the Pit Monitoring Stick can be operated as a stand-alone system or can be connected to AP’s EDGE barn controller to provide automated updates and alerts about manure pit storage levels.

Ralco’s New SOS Oral Drench Gets Sows Back on Feed Faster

Pork producers now have a new tool to help support sow health immediately after farrowing, Ralco said in a company release. SOS, a natural oral drench from Ralco, is a blend of bioactives, a prebiotic and a strategic combination of essential oils that helps improve appetite by supporting healthy gut microflora and bacterial populations to encourage immune function and energy levels.

“Pork producers know that strong feed consumption during lactation impacts a sow’s ability to support her current litter and directly correlates to how quickly she returns to estrus after weaning,” Russell Fent, director of Ralco’s Swine Technical Group, said in a release. “That’s why Ralco has introduced a novel approach to help sows get back on feed more quickly after farrowing. SOS has the potential to improve sows’ overall lifetime productivity.”

Farrowing is a critical time for sows and their piglets, so it’s essential to get them back up and on feed as quickly as possible. In support of their commitment to animal health and farm profitability, Ralco is helping producers address this need in a manner that’s quick and supportive of the animal’s overall wellness, the company said.

One of the primary distinctions of the product is the application method. The sow drench is easy to use and can be applied quickly, Ralco said. By addressing sow stress immediately after farrowing, producers who tested the product saw an increase in feed intake behavior and decreased inflammatory issues in recently farrowed sows.

By using a natural product to support a sow’s immune response and help with intake, producers can also minimize their concerns with withdrawal times, the release said.

First-of-its-Kind Swine Wound Care Product Launches

Oinkment spray-on flexi-film bandage – a groundbreaking new product in swine wound care - is now available from Animal Science Products, Inc. (ASP), the company said in a release. Oinkment is the first flexible, antimicrobial film bandage labeled for use in swine. The sprayable liquid film dries to form a crucial, flexible barrier while killing antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus and other bacteria to support effective wound care and infection control, the company said.

“Oinkment® is unlike any other swine wound care product on the market,” Bailey Reynolds, president and chief executive officer, ASP, said in a release. “It was developed to make wound care easier for producers, with a simple application and unmatched infection control to keep their pigs healthy. We are proud of the work that went into the development of this product and the continued innovation at Animal Science Products.”

It’s the only wound care product comprised completely of food-grade Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) ingredients. GRAS is a designation given by the FDA stating a chemical or substance added to food is considered safe by experts under the conditions of its intended use, the release said.

When applied to wounds on swine, Oinkment increases epithelialization and provides a soothing analgesic activity. This increases wound healing time, compared to current standards. In addition to improving healing time, it keeps infections at bay with its antibacterial and antifungal properties, ASP noted.

Oinkment provides pork producers with a product that can improve shoulder sores, open wounds and abrasions, tail bites and post castration incisions, all in an easy-to-apply, spray-on formula. Its easy application works in every environment, including in pen gestation, crates or any other place the producer may need. It quickly adheres to the wound area, remaining highly visible as it dries on to leave a flexible, protective bandage promoting quicker healing and controlling infections, getting pigs back on track faster, the company said.
