Lee Johnston Receives 2025 Distinguished Service Award for Contributions to Minnesota’s Pork Industry

This year’s winner has dedicated his career to improving swine production systems, mentoring students and supporting pork producers with science-driven solutions.

Lee Johnston, professor and swine nutritionist at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) in Morris, Minn., was honored with the 2025 Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Pork Board. This award recognizes Johnston’s outstanding contributions to research, education and the advancement of Minnesota’s pork industry.

Johnston has dedicated his career to improving swine production systems, mentoring students, and supporting pork producers with science-driven solutions. His leadership in research and outreach has helped shape industry best practices and foster innovation in sustainable pork production.

“Lee’s commitment to research and education has made a lasting impact on the pork industry in Minnesota and beyond,” said Mike Schutz, head of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS). “His work exemplifies the land-grant mission of the University of Minnesota, and we are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.”

Johnston’s career-long dedication to agriculture began on his family’s dairy farm and evolved into a passion for swine nutrition and management. Through his work at WCROC, he has influenced generations of students and industry professionals, ensuring a strong future for Minnesota’s pork sector.
