CIRCUMVENT CML Vaccine Allows Producers to Do More With Less, Merck Says

Veterinarians and producers have the convenience of vaccinating for three of the most important swine disease concerns, while reducing the number of bottles to handle and manage, says Merck’s Jamie Lehman, DVM.

CIRCUMVENT CML vaccine is commercially available as part of Merck Animal Health’s swine product portfolio. The company received license approval for the vaccine from USDA in 2022, and is now releasing the vaccine for sale in the U.S.

CIRCUMVENT CML is the first ready-to-use, single-dose vaccine effective against disease caused by Porcine Circovirus Types 2a and 2d, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Lawsonia intracellularis in pigs, three weeks of age or older, Jamie Lehman, DVM, swine technical services veterinarian for Merck Animal Health, said during a press conference at the World Pork Expo.

Veterinarians and producers have the convenience of vaccinating for three of the most important swine disease concerns, while reducing the number of bottles they need to handle and manage, Lehman explains.

“This vaccine complements the existing CIRCUMVENT PCV G2, PCV-M G2 and PORCILIS Ileitis product portfolio, providing swine veterinarians and producers with the additional option of vaccinating against disease caused by PCV2, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Lawsonia intracellularis all in one bottle,” Lehman says. “This is our latest example of pioneering science that will help the industry improve both animal health and labor efficiency.”

Brett O’Brien, VMD, swine technical services veterinarian, points out that administering this vaccine is less stressful on pigs and people. By administering fewer injections (one vaccine instead of two) with less volume injected, managing fewer bottles of vaccine and creating a simpler, more convenient experience, she says any opportunity to reduce workload and improve sustainability by having less waste is a win.

“Through the years, folks have always communicated that they want to do more with less,” O’Brien says. “Now they can with this 3-in-1 vaccine. Producers won’t have to give as many shots.”

She adds that the first groups of pigs to receive CIRCUMVENT CML have had a positive response from the producers – healthy pigs and happy staff due to speed of use and improved convenience.

“We know it’s a difficult time for pork producers, so we are trying to offer convenience and peace of mind,” O’Brien says.

CIRCUMVENT CML is available in 100- and 500-ml vials. Learn more here.
