Items and food entering a farm can carry pathogens that can be transmitted to swine and have severe consequences. All items are required to be disinfected prior to entry. When administered at the appropriate dose, ultraviolet-C light (UVC) light has been proven to inactivate many significant swine pathogens. Some farms have reported UV disinfection changing the taste of food.
UVC light can penetrate some materials, while it cannot penetrate others. It can penetrate items such as Ziploc bags, clear plastic Tupperware and other clear materials. UVC light cannot penetrate glass, plexiglass, paper bags or solid colored plastics.
Here are a few tips when it comes to food entry using UV chambers.
Recommendations for Food Items Entering Through the UV Chamber
• The risk of alterations of food taste is greater if the food is left inside the chamber for multiple UV cycles. Remove food items as soon as the cycle time is completed and do not allow food to sit inside the chamber for multiple cycles.
• Wrap sandwiches and other food items in aluminum foil.
• Utilize glass containers when possible – UVC cannot penetrate glass.
Reminders for All Items Entering Through the UV Chamber
• Take all items out of lunch boxes, grocery bags, etc.
• Do not stack items.
-Light must contact all surfaces.
• Leave space between items.
-Ensure there are no shadows.
• Do not look at the UV light.
