The line-up of speakers and topics for the 2023 Allen D. Leman Swine Conference is out! Keynotes and breakouts will cover a wide range of topics, including porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, biosecurity, markets, endemic bacteria, emerging diseases, mental health, cost of production, Prop 12 and more.

The Leman Swine Conference, held Sept. 16-19, is an annual educational event for the global swine industry that brings science-driven solutions to the complex challenges facing the industry. Each year hundreds of participants from over 20 countries, including swine veterinarians and other professionals working in swine production and animal health management, attend this event, organizers say. The event is back this year at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minn.

The George Foxcroft Reproduction Workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In recent years, selection for robustness has been a key component of most breeding programs. But what is a robust sow? A robust sow will be better able to meet their genetic potential and have a long and productive life in a variety of different challenges. It is true that ‘gilts are the foundation of the breeding herd,’ however, to help her meet her potential we must support her development. In this session we will discuss several key management aspects necessary to unlock the genetic potential of the robust sow, such as, selection for soundness, novel phenotypic traits, as well as gestation and lactation management.

Geeks to Geeks: Strategies, Challenges and Opportunities for ASF Early Detection and Surveillance will take place from 1 to 5 p.m.
The African Swine Fever (ASF) pandemic has caused devastating losses to affected countries over the last 15 years. In its role as a collaborating center for the World Organization for Animal Health, and a reference center for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the University of Minnesota Center for Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) leads several capacity-building and research activities in ASF-infected countries. Join the CAHFS team and a selection of guest speakers to discuss the latest news, experiences, and recent developments to enhance ASF preparedness and response.

Three special sessions will be held on Saturday night in Portuguese, Chinese and Spanish from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m.

On Sunday, the Carlos Pijoan SDEC Symposium on Advancing Disease Control and Elimination Programs - PEDV will be held from 8 a.m. to noon. It will be followed by the Pork Trust Consortium Workshop on listening to build trust in pork production from 1 to 4:30 p.m. In addition, attendees can attend a session on clinical cases and problem-solving skills by DVM students or a session featuring research highlights.
