Derald Holtkamp, professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has received Iowa State University’s Marvin A. Pomerantz Award. The Pomerantz Award recognizes a Iowa State faculty member deemed outstanding in teaching, research and/or outreach.
With a record of outstanding service in teaching, research, outreach and institutional service, Holtkamp is a recognized international thought leader on the importance of and control of infectious diseases, especially those important to the swine industry.
“His research and interactions with the swine industry globally have had significant impacts on swine health and productivity,” Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine said in a release.
An Iowa State faculty member since 2006, Holtkamp has focused his research on biosecurity, disease risk assessment and the economics of animal health and disease with an emphasis on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus.
He also is a leader of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s internship programs in swine, bovine, poultry and rural veterinary medicine that have attracted over 400 students to real-life experiences alongside practicing food animal veterinarians.
