James D. McKean Swine Disease Conference Scheduled for Nov. 2-3

The annual James D. McKean Swine Disease Conference will be held on Nov. 2-3 at the Scheman Building, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. The program is designed to answer daily concerns of swine practitioners, but producers will find it valuable as well.

This year's conference will cover issues relating to improvements in the ISU VDL's case submission and reporting technology upgrades as well as updates on VFD implementation and non-antibiotic alternatives.

A panel of veterinarians will discuss their experiences with antibiotic free production (ABF). There will also be practitioners’ experiences with Influenza, positive pressure filtration of breeding herds, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae planned exposures and persistent shedding.

Updates on PRRS research will be shared, as well as risk assessments for antibiotic resistance

Look for information on the state of the herd health in Asia, too.

The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Iowa Pork Industry Center, The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV), District 6, sponsor the ISU James D. McKean Swine Disease Conference. It was renamed in 2015 after the death of longtime conference chair, Dr. James D. McKean, and was previously known as the Annual Swine Disease Conference for Swine Practitioners.

Conference officials will offer three pre-conference workshops on the Wednesday afternoon prior to the beginning of the main conference. These workshops will cover bioinformatics tools for Influenza analysis, serological and surveillance monitoring and an interactive diagnostic work shop to be held with the pathologists at the VDL.
