Fire Destroys 12,000 Pigs at Minnesota Farm
A fire killed 12,000 pigs and destroyed two buildings at a southern Minnesota farm on May 16. No injuries were reported for farm staff or fire crews.
Waseca Fire Chief Jason Forshee reported that the fire occurred at Woodville Pork near Waseca around 10:30 p.m., reports CBS Minnesota. When firefighters arrived on the scene, one farm building was completely engulfed in flames.
Of the 12,000 pigs that died, approximately 3,000 were sows and 9,000 were piglets. An estimated 3,000 pigs survived in a separate building not destroyed by the fire. CBS Minnesota reports that firefighters put in a fire break to save the third building.
The fire drew in nine fire departments and more than 20 tankers from the surrounding area to help fight the fire, which was under control about 12 hours later at 10:30 a.m. Monday, the article said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. CBS Minnesota reports Woodville Pork plans to rebuild.
