EPA Approves Intervention Disinfectants to Fight African Swine Fever

Intervention Farm Disinfectant-Cleaner Concentrate has been approved by the EPA for use against African swine fever (ASF) virus, Virox Animal Health announced on Tuesday.

“This viral infection has caused devastation throughout Asia and Europe, and an outbreak in North America would have extreme consequences, both in terms of direct costs of depopulating herds, and long-term economic impacts from limitations to trade,” Virox said in a release.

ASF is a deadly disease of swine with no vaccine or direct treatment option available. Because of this, prevention is the best defense to keep this disease out. According to a company release, rigorous cleaning and disinfection is critical. However, it should not be a trade-off between efficacy against pathogens and safety to the user and environment.

“As industry leaders in infection prevention, our goal is to ensure that our customers are protected against the threat of emerging disease outbreaks. The addition of the ASFv claim provides confidence that Intervention will be highly effective in the event of an outbreak in North America,” the company said.

When used as directed, Intervention is non-toxic, non-irritating and readily biodegradable, the release said.

In the case of ASF virus, Intervention concentrate should be applied for a contact time of ten minutes at a 1:64 dilution.

“Using Intervention with the right training and protocols can help you proceed with certainty against ASF virus,” the company said in the release.
