Premium Standard Farms settles odor lawsuit

Premium Standard Farms (PSF) has settled a long-running lawsuit on odor emanating from the company"s swine buildings located in northern Missouri. The lawsuit was brought by a group of 287 people who claimed their quality of life had been harmed due to the odors. Terms of the settlement were not released.

In 2010, a group of 15 Missouri residents prevailed against the hog producer and was awarded $11 million, leading Premium Standard to warn that they may leave the state, according to the Kansas City Star.

According to PSF, the company has spent tens of millions of dollars to reduce odors from its swine units. According to plaintiffs, the improvement in odor control helped make the settlement possible.
