Company culture is the key driving force that motivates employees to do their job well and stay with a company, according to a recent PORK poll of workers in the swine industry.
People want to feel united, like they're part of a work family and have friends at work that they can bond with, Erin Wagoner, associate director of human resources for The Maschhoffs, said at the Missouri Pork Expo earlier this year.
“And we want them to continue to feel engaged,” Wagoner said.
Heidi Vittetoe, co-owner of JWV Pork in Washington, Iowa., agreed and said building a culture of trust is key at JWV Pork.
Fear is a big demotivator, Vittetoe said. Meanwhile, trust builds employee morale.
“We have to stop commoditizing people,” Vittetoe said. “You are employing a collection of individual human beings who all have their own gifts, strengths and weaknesses.”
Although 46% of respondents said company culture kept them at a job, 30% agreed that salary and above-average benefits and compensation made them want to stay with a company. Meanwhile, 11% claimed a voice in the decision-making process motivated them to do their job well. Recognition and respectful bosses came in as the lowest vote-getters at 7% each.
