OIE's New Campaign Rallies Industry to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance

When it comes to fighting antimicrobial resistance, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) is rallying everyone from producers to veterinarians to policymakers to step up.

“The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a major concern and effective medicines to control and treat animal and human diseases may soon no longer work,” reports the OIE. “Animals count on us all to ensure that we preserve and protect the future of these crucial medicines.”

OIE developed a video featuring these “Five Only” guidelines to help stop antimicrobial resistance:

1.    Only use antimicrobials when prescribed by a veterinarian.
2.    Only when needed: antimicrobials do not cure very infection.
3.    Only obtain antimicrobials from authorized sources and retailers.
4.    Only use the dosage and follow length of treatment and withdrawal period as prescribed.
5.    Only use antimicrobials when associated with good animal health care.
