Scholarships, internships and ambassadors – oh my! Missouri Pork Association (MPA) opened applications for a variety of professional development opportunities.

Three internships are available to college students who have completed at least two years of courses, with one internship position opening in fall, spring and summer. The application, which requires three letters of recommendation, is due Nov. 1, 2019.

Fall and spring interns should expect 15 hours per week, and the summer internship is full-time. Fall tasks include writing magazine articles and planning the Swine Institute. Spring tasks include managing the Missouri Pork Expo auctions and attending the Working Women’s Survival Show in St. Louis, and summer interns will attend World Pork Expo and manage the Missouri Pork Institute.

Young adults who have not yet completed two years of postsecondary education qualify for the 2020 Youth Pork Ambassador Program. Ambassadors receive a $1,000 scholarship and attend six events throughout the year, including Taste of Elegance and the University of Missouri Pork Institute.

Pork Ambassador applicants must be a high school senior up to a sophomore in college as of January 1st of the year they become ambassadors. An application and three letters of recommendation are due Dec. 13, 2019, and more information can be found by contacting Diane Slater, MPA director of communications, at [email protected]

In addition to internship and ambassador positions, MPA is also offering a $2,500 scholarship for a student pursuing a career in a swine-related field. The Missy North Memorial Scholarship honors the late Missy North, wife of Missouri pork producer Bob North, who loved raising hogs and was active in the industry.

Scholarship applicants must be an undergraduate student attending a two-year swine program in Missouri or a four-year College of Agriculture in Missouri, majoring in animal sciences or a related area, and having completed at least 30 hours of college courses. An application and two letters of reference must be completed by Jan. 10, 2020, and the scholarship will be awarded at the Missouri Pork Expo.
