Empty freezers in Iowa food pantries will once again be full of pork loins after the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa Select Farms donate more than 60,000 pounds of fresh, boneless pork loins to help feed families in need. The pork will be delivered June 18 – July 2 to 102 community organizations, food shelves and pantries across the state.
“Food insecurity is an unfortunate reality for too many Iowans. We hope this pork loin donation will help bring families together and provide some stability,” said Jeff Hansen, President and CEO of Iowa Select Farms. “Food pantry inventories are historically low during the months of June and July, when schools are out for summer vacation and holiday donation inventory dwindle.”
The “Haul Out Hunger” program continues the long-standing efforts of Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation to support local food pantries while building awareness of food insecurity issues in Iowa. Throughout the six-day “Haul Out Hunger” program period, Iowa Select Farms employees will deliver 1,015 cases of meat, each containing 12,180 pork loins (30.75 tons), which will provide 292,320 servings of nutritious pork for families in need.
Deliveries at many of the food pantries will be live-streamed on the Iowa Select Farms Facebook page and featured on the company blog. “It’s important to recognize the effort displayed by each pantry’s volunteers and highlight the stories of the families they serve,” said Jen Sorenson, Director of Communications for Iowa Select Farms. “Without their dedication, organization and participation, programs like ‘Haul Out Hunger’ would not be possible.”
“Our clients look forward to this donation every year because many of our families simply can’t afford meat,” said Gwen Simpson, coordinator for the Food Pantry in Lamoni, Iowa. “Studies show that they’ll buy the cheapest foods that don’t have the greatest nutrition, so receiving the high quality, protein-filled pork loins each year means a lot to us and the families we serve.”
A 16-page booklet will be provided to families with information about how to properly store, handle and prepare the pork. The booklet also contains a collection of easy, economical recipes for families to prepare the pork loin into a full meal and even stretch it into several meals.
