Although the U.S. is no longer part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, what happens to the agreement could have a significant impact on pork producers here.
It appears finalization of the TPP deal will be delayed: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe call for an early, or snap, election, one year before scheduled elections, to take advantage of favorable public opinion, according to a report from the National Pork Producers Council. This election takes precedence over talks on TTP.
“The deal was expected to be finalized in November,” states NPPC, which strong supported the TPP before President Trump withdrew from the negotiations in January this year.
NPPC continues to urge the Trump administration to explore bilateral free trade agreements, beginning with Japan.
