DSM Animal Nutrition & Health now offers the option of packaging premix in low-density linear polyethylene (LDPE) bags. The extremely durable, white-tinted bags are 100 percent recyclable and provide protection from air and sunlight, which can be detrimental to vitamin potency. The thickness of the polyethylene helps reduce bag damage during transport to and within customers" warehouses and feed mills. Bag exteriors are textured to improve handling and ensure that bags on pallets hold together. Heat sealing is used to eliminate the risk of thread or tape contaminating micro-bins or finished feed. The bags also clean out easily for reduced product shrink. New bags meet FDA requirements for food packaging and comply with international shipping standards.
Developed to meet customer needs
The effort to provide environmentally friendly packaging was in response to a customer"s request for premix packaging that could become part of their internal recycling initiative. Traditional multi-walled paper bags with a polyethylene liner require separation of the paper before either component can be recycled. The new bags don"t require this additional step, saving time, space and disposal costs. As an added benefit, the switch to polyethylene bags has increased the income this customer"s recycling initiative generates and further reduces the waste materials going into landfills.
New, state-of-the-art packaging equipment in the Pendergrass, Ga. and Ames, Iowa premix plants allows DSM to offer the LDPE bag option to customers. Customers can choose the bag type they prefer when developing their premix specifications. Similar upgrades to packaging equipment at DSM premix plants in Fort Worth, Texas and Ayr, Ontario will occur in the near future.
Driven by sustainability and quality promise
Before settling on the LDPE alternative, the company looked at other options, including polywoven products.
"Some alternatives to paper, like woven plastics, raised concerns about contamination and damage to equipment at the feed mills," notes Marc de Beer, Ph.D., vice president, DSM Animal Nutrition & Health, North American area. "The LDPE product is a single flat sheet that cleans out thoroughly when poured."
The addition of LDPE packaging is just the beginning of several changes that focus on the DSM pledge of quality, reliability, traceability and sustainability. Within the next several months, a global pallet labeling project will be implemented, allowing customers immediate access to information on pallet contents, including purchase-order numbers, lot numbers, manufacturing date and ingredients.
