AMS trains USDA organic certifiers

The National Organic Program spent two days training U.S. Department of Agriculture- accredited organic certifiers at an annual training event.

The Jan. 31-Feb. 1 event in Portland, Ore., was attended by over 200 certifier staff and other industry members.

Patricia Kane, coordinator of the Accredited Certifiers Association, was presented with a certificate of appreciation.

The NOP also published a training program for organic certifiers and inspectors. The program is styled as an interactive "choose your own adventure" scenario, where trainees choose what they think the best course of action is. After completing it, the user learns the consequences of their choices, whether that means unhappy, uninformed growers or a mistakenly certified farm.

The training takes about 30 minutes, and is at this website.
