Since the beginning of 2016, Ukraine has seen 64 cases of African swine fever reported in 15 different regions across the country. Though African swine is harmless to people, it is lethal to pigs.
Due to the outbreak, several foreign countries including Armenia, Belarus, Moldova and Romania, have suspended any pork imports from the Ukraine. With the pork industry fearing collapse, the Ukraine government is stepping in to implement measures to stop the spread of the disease and establishing veterinarian groups to monitor pig farms to try to address the issue.
"We should take emergency measures to address this issue. Otherwise, we will lose our pig farming sector," Taras Kutovyi, Agriculture Minister, said during an emergency meeting with veterinary officials and farmers.
