5 Reasons We Love Pig Farmers

Pork producers
( National Pork Board and the Pork Checkoff )

At Farm Journal’s PORK we celebrate the hard work our pig farmers do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. But, in honor of National Farmer's Day, we wanted to share five reasons why we are pig farmers' biggest fans.

1.    Pig farmers feed the world.
Nearly 22 billion pounds of pork are produced by 63,000+ pig farmers each year. Pork is the most consumed animal protein in the world.

2.    Pig farmers care about their pigs.
Health is a priority on pork operations across the country. From rigorous barn sanitation to proper vaccination protocols, our pig farmers show they care by providing the best care possible to their pigs.

3.    Pig farmers are doing more with less.
In 1959, it took eight pigs (including breeding stock) to produce 1,000 pounds of pork. Today, it takes just five pigs. By using improved genetics, better nutrition, more efficient facilities, pork producers are using fewer resources to produce a pound of pork.

4.    Pig farmers care about your health.
Farmers keep detailed records of all medications they use in raising and caring for pigs. They work closely with their veterinarians to protect their pigs’ health and reduce the need to use antibiotics. The industry works closely with animal and human health experts to define and guide responsible antibiotic use.

5.    Pig farmers bring home the bacon.
Need we say more? Thank you to our pig farmers for making a difference in our world every day.
